The New York Yankees were unable to help Masahiro Tanaka get a win tonight as they were defeated by the Oakland Athletics at Yankee Stadium.

New York Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka was firing on all cylinders on Friday night, but with no help from the offense and two hits surrendered by Tyler Clippard, the Oakland Athletics took game one in the Bronx.
The 28-year-old fanned 13 batters — to become just the third Yankees’ pitcher to fan at least 13 since 2010 — over 7.1 innings of work. He also didn’t allow a walk or a run, until Adam Rosales smacked a one-out single in the eighth.
Manager Joe Girardi then called on Tyler Clippard, who would make an errant throw on a pickoff attempt to allow Rosales to head to third. Although they nabbed the runner coming home on the very next play, Jed Lowrie came through during the next at-bat to put the A’s on the board by a score of 1-0.
Oakland would add another to make it 2-0 and Steven Vogt put the game away with a two-run bomb off Jonathan Holder.
On the flip side of Tanaka, A’s starter Sean Manaea dazzled as well and ultimately came out on top. The lefty held New York to no runs on four hits while striking out eight over seven innings. Ryan Madson posted a scoreless eighth and Santiago Casilla sealed the deal en route to handing the Yankees a loss despite ending it with the tying run at the dish.
Unfortunate History:
Tanaka became just the second Yankees’ pitcher in history to strike out 13 or more batters, walk none and not get a winning decision. He’s the first since Roger Clemens accomplished the unhappy feat on May 28, 2000, against the Boston Red Sox.
What’s Next:
The Yankees and A’s will go at it again in game two of this three-game set in the Bronx on Saturday afternoon. CC Sabathia will make his 10th start of the season coming off two straight wins in two straight starts. Over his last 11.2 innings, the 36-year-old has allowed just one earned run (0.77 ERA).
