New York Yankees centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury was unable to complete Wednesday’s contest after leaving with an apparent injury caused by a wall collision.
Jacoby Ellsbury left Wednesday’s contest between the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals after a first-inning collision with the centerfield wall.
The first pitch of the contest from Luis Severino to Alcides Escobar was smacked to deep center field and Ellsbury timed the falling baseball perfectly to snare it before it hit the wall for extra-bases. Unfortunately, his momentum drove his head right into the middle of the fence.
Ellsbury would finish the inning after being checked on but would not come out for the top of the second, as Aaron Hicks replaced him. Earlier in the year, the33-year old missed some time with a pinched nerve in his elbow after another wall-crashing catch, but this one, however, seemed like a head collision. New York’s training staff is understandably concerned with a concussion, which likely caused Ellsbury’s exit.
The center fielder owns a slash line of .281/.349/.422 with four home runs and a wRC+ of 113 — his highest since 2013. Losing Ellsbury would be a rough loss, but Hicks, who ranks ninth in wRC+ among outfielders (min. 90 PA), would do a fine job if any DL time is needed.
