The Knicks are moving forward with the triangle offense by making coaching changes. Kristaps Porzingis’ favorite assistant was a victim.

The New York Knicks aren’t on good terms with the Kristaps Porzingis right now, but that didn’t stop them from making a recent change to the coaching staff. The Knicks cut ties with Porzingis’ favorite assistant coach.

According to Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News, Joshua Longstaff’s contract wasn’t renewed. Longstaff, one of the few remaining holdovers from the Derek’s Fisher staff, went overseas last season to help train Porzingis.

They two are so close that Porzingis even requested Longstaff as an assistant coach on the Latvian national team this summer for the European Championships.

Per Bondy, Longstaff played a key role in the development of Willy Hernangomez and Ron Baker this season.

Longstaff isn’t a triangle guy, though. With the Knicks committed to the triangle offense next season, Phil Jackson likely wants to hire a triangle guy to replace Longstaff. Right now, Kurt Rambis is the only one on staff.

Porzingis’ brother and agent met with Jackson, but it accomplished very little. That’s pretty evident today.
