Hal Steinbrenner indicated yesterday at the MLB Owner’s Meetings in Chicago that his New York Yankees could look very different come July 31.
With his team angling for a sweep of the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, Steinbrenner had this to say, per the Associated Press (via ESPN).
“We’re going to see where we are at, what options are available and what those options would cost.”
Steinbrenner went on to add that he has zero interest in giving up any of his top-tier talents to make improvements to the current roster.
Considering the Yankees set the benchmark for acquiring one piece for a slew of talent, it seems pretty evident that no other club is going to cut any breaks when dealing with the Yankees brass.
The aforementioned top-tier talents include guys like Gleyber Torres, Clint Frazier, and Justus Sheffield. However, the performances of kids like Tyler Wade (.319/.394/.447- SWB), Dustin Fowler (.299/.348/.551- SWB) and Chance Adams (5-0, 0.90 ERA, .175 BAA- SWB), will certainly force the boss to change his definition of the phrase “top-tier”.
In other off the field news, young backstop Kyle Higashioka has been placed on the seven-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, May 15.
Finally, not that anything between Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter is ever final, ESPN’s Andrew Marchand reported that Rodriguez would not officially say whether or not he received a “formal” invitation to Jeter’s retirement ceremony.
The infamous former Yankee went on to add that he watched the entire ceremony with his mother in his apartment.
