Tommy McNamara’s header, as well as a series of terrific saves from Sean Johnson, saw New York City FC draw the first of four away matches in a row.
Tommy MccNamara rescued a point for NYCFC with a second half header on Sunday in a 1-1 draw in Dallas as his side played out the first of four away matches.
Kellyn Acosta’s shot beat Johnson with a short range finish in the middle of the box after Dallas midfielder Maximilano Urruti redirected a cross into his path as the hosts took the lead just after twenty minutes.
Dallas nearly grabbed a second in less than a minute when Barrios found himself in space on the left hand side and played in Tesho Akindele, whose shot forced Sean Johnson into a decent save. Despite their deficit, NYCFC offered little for the remainder of the first half despite.
Johnson would make a fine save less than ten minutes into the second half with strong hand to force a strong shot from Urruti onto the crossbar and preserve the score.
Jack Harrison’s effort from outside the box ten minutes later was the New Yorkers’s only real sight at goal until that point. Though his shot narrowly missed, David Villa’s free kick rebounded off of the crossbar straight into the path of McNamara who headed in the equalizer before crashing into Dallas’s net.
Vieira’s men will not have only McNamara to thank for their point, however. Johnson produced a fingertip save following an excellent Dallas counterattack which saw Cristian Colman one on one with the NYCFC keeper.
NYC remain in fourth after the draw, but could move up to third should they win their game in hand over Columbus Crew. The Yankee Stadium club will wind up just two points behind conference leaders Toronto FC, who have played two matches more, with two victories.
They will face Salt Lake, Orlando, and Atlanta on the road before they return to Yankee Stadium on the 31st in their clash with the New England Revolution.
