New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia underwent successful surgery on Friday and is expected to be out several months.
The New York Mets season has been plagued by the injury bug, and now Jeurys Familia has joined the list of Mets players such as Noah Syndergaard, Travis d’Arnaud and Yoenis Cespedes on the disabled list.
Familia has been placed on the 10-day disabled list due to an arterial clot in his shoulder. According to Sandy Alderson the Mets general manager. Familia underwent surgery today in St. Louis to correct the problem.
It appears that Familia will be out for months and it’s possible that he could miss the rest of the season. No additional information was giving out about the surgery or his rehab process.
The Mets bullpen has been heavily used this season. The loss of Familia complicates things even further for manager Terry Collins.
Familia, last season, was lights out as the team’s closer. He converted on 51 out of 56 saves attempts. He pitched to a 2.45 ERA. These numbers are a big reason why he was a representative on the National League All-Star team last year.
The Mets have already been without Familia this season as he served a suspension for 15 games because of a domestic violence situation.
He has only appeared in 11 games and has a total of three saves in four opportunities. He is someone who is hard to replace. Now reports are saying the Mets are exploring trade options to acquire someone to replace him.
Guys like David Robertson, Alex Colome or Kelvin Herrera are possible players that the Mets could look to add to their team.
