Second baseman Neil Walker got some much needed revenge over the San Francisco Giants tonight for the New York Mets on a walk-off single.

After Jacob deGrom‘s quality start and 11 strikeouts, the New York Mets‘ lineup backed up their ace with a walk-off win, and the credit is all due to Neil Walker.

Walker-Off

After a Michael Conforto walk and a Wilmer Flores infield single, Walker cracked a line drive single to right, scoring Conforto in the bottom on the ninth, winning the game for the Mets.

The switch-hitting second baseman also had a ground-rule RBI double in the first inning, his eighth two-bagger on the young year.

This break for Walker is the latest in a stretch of improvements on his early season struggles — a welcome sign for fans who are still weeping over the injury to Yoenis Cespedes.

deGrom’s Got K’s For Days

deGrom had another bittersweet showing tonight against the Giants, tossing six three-run innings, with four hits and three walks allowed, while striking out 11 — his K total on the season now stands at 60 through 42.2 frames.

Although deGrom did end up with a quality start tonight, he hasn’t been as stingy as fans are accustomed to seeing him — an issue Mets management would like to see resolved with much of their starting pitching depth either injured, suspended or, frankly, under-performing.

What Else to Know From Tonight

Curtis Granderson continued to show signs of improvement for the Mets on this night, as he roped a sixth inning RBI double to left-center field, scoring Juan Lagares to tie the game up at three all.

Essentially a first base placeholder while Lucas Duda is out, T.J. Rivera continues to do nothing but hit, as the utility man hit a line drive double in the fifth to score deGrom and move Conforto up to third. Since his call-up, Rivera is batting .275 with six doubles, a homer and six RBIs.

Conforto continued to impress out of the leadoff spot, going 1-for-3 tonight with two runs scored and two walks — with his second run being the game winner in the bottom half of the ninth.

The bullpen again backed up a solid night from deGrom, as the combination of Fernando Salas, Jerry Blevins, Addison Reed and Jeurys Familia tossed a combined three scoreless frames, including just one hit and no walks allowed, while striking out three.

Up Next For the Mets

The Mets will take on the Giants at Citi Field again tomorrow night at 7:10 p.m., with Zack Wheeler slated to face Jeff Samardzija in a duel of struggling arms.
