Despite good odds at the end of 2016, two New York Giants tight ends could be seeing the end of their Big Blue careers very soon.

At the conclusion of the New York Giants 2016 season, tight ends Will Tye and Jerell Adams had to like their chances of being the starting tight end in 2017.

But after the Giants signed free agent tight end/fullback Rhett Ellison and drafting Evan Engram in the first round of the draft, Tye and Adams future with the Giants is uncertain.

Tye, who went undrafted in the 2015 draft, has been the most productive tight end for the Giants for the past two seasons despite not being a full-time starter. In two seasons with the Giants, he has 90 receptions for 859 yards and four touchdowns. This is why the Giants re-signed Tye to a one-year deal in February.

The only knock on Tye is that he is not a good blocker and that he only averages 4.1 yards after catch (YAC).

Tye has a similar skill set to Engram except for the fact that the latter is must faster and an inch taller. Engram was actually the fastest tight end at the NFL combine. Engram is expected to make an immediate impact and be the best tight end that Eli Manning has played with since Jeremy Shockey.

There’s no way Tye will play ahead of Engram and since he struggles when asked to block, it will be difficult for Tye to make the final roster.

After playing sparingly for much of the season, Jerell Adams who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2016 draft saw more playing time during the last month of the season. He was by far the best blocking tight end on the Giants roster last year which made him a huge asset considering the Giants offensive line struggles. He finished the season with 16 receptions for 122 yards and one touchdown.

But with the Giants now having Ellison who is known as one of the best blocking tight ends in the league could make Adams expendable.

The start of training camp is a little over two months away, but the tight end battle will be one of the most intriguing roster battles to watch for.

With the Giants needing to have more bodies at positions such as the offensive line and linebacker position, they likely keep more than three tight ends on their active roster. With Engram and Ellison locks to make the roster barring an injury, the final tight end spot will come down to Tye or Adams.
