As the New York Mets are struggling to stay healthy, the team picked up a desperate 16-5 win against their NL East rival, the Atlanta Braves.
While some New York Mets fans are already throwing in the towel on the team’s season due to their innate inability to stay healthy with the news of Noah Syndergaard‘s injury, the season is still young and division up for grabs.On Wednesday night, the Mets’ lineup scored 16 runs on 20 hits, including five RBIs from Jose Reyes, along with nine doubles as a team.
Mets manager Terry Collins knew at some point the offense would pick up, despite injuries hurting the ball club.
“We have a good offensive team,” Collins said, via the New York Post. “And you knew at some time we were going to start getting some hits.”
Reyes reportedly felt very comfortable at the plate against the Atlanta Braves, and believes the Mets can continue performing at a high level.
“We were hitting with men in scoring position, so that is what you want,” said Reyes. “Hopefully we can continue to play like this. Not that we are going to score 16 runs every game, but if you get a key hit with two outs and runners in scoring position, that is huge.”
The Mets improved to 4-2 on their seven-game road trip, with a chance to take the series from the Braves on Thursday night.
If they have hopes of making the postseason for a third year in a row, the offense will have to find a way to keep the momentum going until their key players — Yoenis Cespedes, Steven Matz and Thor — are healthy again.
