On Saturday, Apr. 29, 2017, a man tormented the New York Rangers all afternoon long in Canada.

That man’s name was Jean-Gabriel Pageau who tallied an amazing four goals in his team’s thrilling 6-5 double-overtime victory in Game 2 of the second-round Stanley Cup Playoff series.

He only gathered 12 during the regular season. This means he came up with a third of his season total in one game.

What’s interesting, and depressing from the New York point of view, is that at 5-3 with a few minutes remaining in the third period, it looked as though the Rangers were on their way home with a split.

It was not to be as Pageau buried the game-winner early into the second OT frame high wide-side against Henrik Lundqvist:

In the first OT, Rick Nash had a shot to end it, but simply couldn’t:

With the game at 5-4 late in the third, it was Pageau who deflected one home for his third of the game with just 1:02 remaining:

For the Rangers, it was a collapse of epic proportions. When skating with a 5-3 lead with four minutes remaining, never should a game be lost.

Prior to the Senators heroics, it looked as though Brady Skjei would be the hero for the road team. All told, the youngster scored twice, upping his playoff total to four:

Michael Grabner opened the scoring at the 4:16 mark of the first period. It was a short-handed goal, beautifully set up by Jesper Fast:

In fact, New York was shorthanded three times in the opening frame. They killed it off successfully each time.

Ottawa tied the game later in the first period thanks to an unassisted mark by Jean-Gabriel Pageau:

The second period is really when the Rangers made their mark. The ice opened up and New York took advantage, flying all over the ice. First, shortly after goaltender Craig Anderson robbed J.T. Miller on the power play, Chris Kreider sniped one top shelf:

Under three minutes later, the Rangers picked up their second shorthanded goal of the game, courtesy of Derek Stepan:

Despite the Rangers offense, the theme of the game continued as Ottawa answered each time New York struck.

Marc Methot capitalized on a juicy rebound to cut the lead to one:

That’s when Skjei came in, scoring twice to put his team up two goals each time.

Obviously, in true Rangers fashion, they allowed the Sens to tally a fourth goal with 3:19 to go in regulation and allowed Ottawa that one chance they needed to come up huge, which they did.

Lundqvist was pretty poor in the contest. He was out of position a ton and could only stop 28-of-34 shots. Craig Anderson was brilliant for the most part in stopping 43-of-48.

This is a tough one for Alain Vigneault‘s club to swallow. They firmly outplayed the Senators for most of the game.

Game 3 will be played on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden with the Rangers down 2-0 in the series.
