The New York Jets are in the market for a franchise quarterback, but a new development could have the Cleveland Browns and Mitchell Trubisky as a possibility.

This is the question the New York Jets are asking themselves: In a bad case of deja vu, in more ways than one, would this team potentially mortgage the future for an unproven rookie?

They’ve done it before. Well, sort of, when they acquired Mark Sanchez. Over the course of this NFL offseason, we’ve heard a lot of Sanchez-Mitchell Trubisky comparisons. Beyond the physical characteristics, they have other commonalities.

Including minimal amounts of college starts, Trubisky (13 starts), Sanchez (16 starts). When deciding on whether to pull the trigger on a prospective guy, I always go to the tale of the tape. The tape doesn’t lie.

Although in cases like Trubisky/Sanchez, the tape sort of lies. There’s simply not enough of it to pick apart. On the surface, Trubisky is by far the most “talented” quarterback in this class. He’s equipped with laser accuracy, pocket mobility and solid arm strength.

For context, Trubisky has 13-career college starts. My favorite quarterback out of this class, Deshaun Watson, has more than twice that many wins in his college career (32-3). That, to me, is concerning if the Jets have serious interest in Trubisky, which by all accounts, they do.

But let’s just say that the latest NFL Draft rumor that the Cleveland Browns are seriously considering taking Trubisky with their first overall pick, as per Adam Schefter of ESPN. Would the Jets make the call?

As Rich Cimini pointed out in his latest column on ESPN.com, the Jets wouldn’t be as fortunate this time around on a potential trade package. The Jets would have to give up some serious compensation to package and move up.

Listen to “The Jets Zone: Thomas Jones

If I were the Jets, I wouldn’t do it, but I’m not the Jets. Although if they feel like he’s a franchise guy, you do whatever it takes to land him. Teams that have the quarterbacks are the ultimate one percent. They’re always in the playoffs and those teams always are competing for championships.

This is something the Jets know nothing about, so the future is a huge massive red oak in my eyes. The Jets have been hacking at it for the last 50 years. In that half a century, they’ve broken a few axes trying to take it down, but that hasn’t stopped them from trying. That theory drives me to say if this NFL Draft is a lottery, why not keep trying to win every year by taking a quarterback in each draft?

In my eyes, you keep drafting one until you find your guy. Because if you don’t find one, you’re just wasting your time in the regular season.

Christian Hackenberg shouldn’t preclude the team from taking a signal caller in the upcoming 2017 NFL Draft.

As a matter of fact, I fully expect the Jets to take a signal caller. It’s not a matter of if, but when. I can see them pulling the trigger at six. This entire Cleveland Browns thing seems like either a smokescreen to get a team like the Jets to trade up or they’re the Browns and they’re seriously considering taking Trubisky.

To be honest, that wouldn’t surprise me. Although if I was the Browns and I definitely wanted both guys, I would just use their bounty of picks to trade up with the San Francisco 49ers to lock it in. They certainly have the ammunition to do it.

So at the end of the day, would the Jets do it to capture, by far, the top talent in Myles Garrett?

Possibly. Will they do it? We’ll have to wait and find out.
