Would the New York Jets dare trade their former second round pick in Christian Hackenberg? It would help my mock draft make more sense…

Yes, anything that can help make my 2017 NFL Mock Draft V1 look more intelligent is something I’m interested in exploring. Speak of the devil, this little item also relates to something the New York Jets could potentially look into.

Kevin Sirkin of NYJetsFans.com explored the former ties between Christian Hackenberg and his former coach at Penn State, Bill O’Brien, now head coach of the QB-needy Houston Texans.

I admit while making my mock look better would be cool, outside of that, I just don’t see it materializing. The only way it would is if the price tag was so minuscule.

If the price tag was that small it would be awful because Mike Maccagnan would have some explaining to do on that second round pick he used.

Speaking of draft picks and such, head coach Todd Bowles continues his Pro Day visits in Baton Rouge, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

“The Jets’ Todd Bowles was one of at least four head coaches at today’s LSU pro day, according to the NFL Network. LSU’s top prospects are S Jamal Adams and RB Leonard Fournette, both of whom could be in play for the Jets at No. 6. Bowles also scouted the recent Ohio State pro day, where he saw two top prospects — S Malik Hooker and CB Marshon Lattimore.”

The Jets could use a running back and Leonard Fournette looked phenomenal at his Pro Day. That’d be a bit of a luxury pick considering running back value, although you can’t deny the talent that’s there.

There’s no question the Jets need safety help. Cimini also noted on the ESPN staff panel that the Jets biggest need left was at that position.

“Marcus Gilchrist (knee surgery) probably won’t be ready for training camp and Calvin Pryor is coming off a disappointing season. Backup Rontez Miles saw significant action in 2016, but he’s not viewed as starting material. Look for the Jets to address the need in the draft, possibly with the No. 6 overall pick. Top prospects Jamal Adams and Malik Hooker could be in play for the Jets at that spot.” Rich Cimini

Gilchrist is going to get cut, Pryor still has hope/talent, but they need leadership. Jamal Adams or Malik Hooker could provide that. I talked about that diatribe in my latest: The Jets Zone podcast.

The Jets have a ton of needs, which has resulted in varying amounts of prospects landing to them in mock drafts across the stratosphere. Which speaking of, Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have another one out.

“Kiper has the Jets picking North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. McShay has them picking LSU safety Jamal Adams.”
