New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard says New York baseball fans like the Mets more than the New York Yankees.

The New York Yankees used to rule New York City. In fact, a case can be made New York will always be a Yankees town.

However, a lot has changed now that the Mets talented and star-studded cast has led to great success. And a certain Mets pitcher understands this.

On Wednesday, Noah Syndergaard said on the Dan Patrick show that New York is a Mets town now. Patrick asked the Mets ace about his interactions with Yankee fans and he said he doesn’t really have any.

“I don’t think I’ve really run into a Yankees fan,” he told Patrick. “They might mention to me that they’re a Yankees fan and (say), ‘I think you’re a great pitcher,’ stuff like that, but now New York … it’s a Mets city.”

Last week, Quinnipiac University did a poll of New York baseball fans and 45 percent of those who were pulled were Mets fans and 43 percent were Yankee fans, according to Larry McShane and Molly Crane-Newman of the New York Daily News. The question is, why do fan prefer the Mets over the Yankees?

“I just think we got a lot of exciting players, guys like Cespedes, who’s incredible to watch, the starting-five core that we have in our rotation, full of a lot of youth,” the Mets pitcher said. We’re backed by a lot of great team leadership, a lot of veterans on the team like Curtis Granderson. I couldn’t be more thankful to have that guy on our side. Guys like David (Wright) — even though he’s hurt right now I hope he gets on the field as fast as possible and has a speedy recovery. But just having his presence in the clubhouse is unbelievable.”

The Mets success on the field helps back up Syndergaard’s statement that New York is a Mets town. In 2015 the Mets made it to the World Series but lost to the Kansas City Royals. Last year they were 87-75 and lost to the San Francisco Giants in the Wild Card.

Meanwhile, the Yankees were 84-78 last year and failed to make the playoffs. In 2015 they made the playoffs for the first time since 2012 but lost to the Houston Astros in the wild card.

It looks like the Mets-Yankees rivalry is back. Now, Yankees, can u please turn New York back into a Yankee town?
