In his first Opening Day start, New York Yankees right fielder jumped on the first pitch of the season he saw for an RBI double off Tampa Bays’ right-hander, Chris Archer.
Judge, who struck out in 50 percent of his at-bats during his brief cameo in 2016, came into spring training with a new aggressive approach and saw incredible results.
Last year, the 24-year-old saw 4.29 pitches per plate appearance but in camp, he cut that total down to 1.77 in order to avoid curveball-friendly counts. Well, looks like that approach carried into the regular season as he wasted no time against a first pitch 86 mph slider from the Rays’ ace.
Yes, there are 161 games left to play and there is no guarantee that this trend will continue, but, for the Yankees’ sake, they are sure glad Judge worked on one of the main issues that was brought to light in 2016.
