Is New York Jets’ star Sheldon Richardson destined to get traded? What about Jets’ quarterback Bryce Petty?
We are not just in NFL Draft season, but we’re in mock draft season. This means New York Jets fans are thinking about packages they could potentially receive for mercurial star Sheldon Richardson.
Well according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, that price could be a package deal.
“With so many needs, the Jets are looking to accumulate draft picks, not trade them away. That’s where Richardson comes into play. Instead of dealing the third-rounder, the Jets could trade their second-round pick and Richardson for the 24th pick.”
“Knowing the Jets, who were seeking a first-round pick last fall for Richardson, they’d probably try to hold on to the second-rounder, hoping to package their third-rounder and Richardson for the 24th. That would be a nice deal for the Jets.”
I thought this would be appropriate considering today is Wrestlemania, but I digress. As much as I love Sheldon’s talent and abilities, the writing is on the wall. The Jets need to get what they can for him before they lose him for nothing.
This deal would be perfect, with new NFL rules, as the Jets are allowed to trade compensatory picks. So if the Jets could package a third and Sheldon and launch back up into the bottom of the first to grab the quarterback of the future or even another talented player, that’d be best for both sides.
The Jets are showing no shame in their tanking efforts, which is why there’s no logical reason to keep Richardson on a one-year rental for no reason. So we’ll have to wait till draft day to see if they can pull off this move.
But they may not be done making moves.
I was perusing the New York Daily News Jets section and saw a Jets mailbag by Manish Mehta. For every action, there is a reaction. Here was the question from a fan and the requisite answer by Mehta via the NYDN.

If the Jets don’t draft a quarterback in the first four rounds, Petty will be on the Week 1 roster. If the Jets do draft a quarterback in the first four rounds, Petty will not be on the Week 1 roster.”
About seven months ago, I wrote a piece suggesting that the Jets should trade Bryce Petty. I believe the Jets are going to take a quarterback somewhere in this upcoming 2017 NFL Draft.
This means the Jets are going to have to make a decision and for me, the decision is easy, trade Petty away. I don’t see him as anything more than a career backup at best … he just doesn’t have what it takes.
So why not see what you can get for him, even if it’s a late round pick? Let this possibility simmer on the stove and re-check this meal after the draft and we’ll see how you feel.
