Per a report, the New York Giants have scheduled a meeting with Penn State safety Malik Gordon.
Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports the New York Giants will hold a meeting with safety prospect Malik Golden of Penn State.
After selecting safeties Landon Collins and Darian Thompson in the first three rounds of consecutive drafts, it’s unlikely Golden is a top priority for the Giants. New York also currently employs safety Andrew Adams, who showed tons of promise last season as an undrafted free agent, as well as solid veteran player Rahim Moore. Meanwhile, former Giants fifth round draft picks Nat Berhe and Mykkele Thompson round out the team’s depth chart at the position.
However, CBSsports.com currently has Golden as their lowest rated strong safety in the upcoming draft, meaning he will likely be available for the team to sign as a UDFA. If that happens the Giants could end up pursuing Golden for his low-risk, high reward potential.
Over 34 career collegiate games Golden accumulated 130 tackles (a career high 75 of which came last season), two interceptions, and five passes defended. He started 13 games for the Nittany Lions in 2016 and could make a push for the 53-man roster as a solid special teams player.
As a senior last year, Golden took a huge step forward as a player. In addition to his career-high in tackles, Golden also posted bests in tackles for loss (six), passes defended (three), forced fumbles (one). New York would be a wise to kick the tires on him if he’s still available following the draft to see if he can continue his growth as a player.
Golden is clearly a solid tackler and ran an impressive 4.5-second forty-yard dash at his Pro Day. These traits could make him ideal on kickoff and punt coverages if he can prove himself in training camp. Golden will be a player to keep an eye on for the Giants during the undrafted free agent signing period.
