The New York Yankees have named right-handed pitcher Luis Severino the fourth starter of the starting rotation.

After much anticipation and even a tease as to who earned the fourth spot in the New York Yankees rotation, 23-year-old Luis Severino has earned a spot, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

Last year, the righty made 11 starts and went 0-8 with an 8.50 ERA while serving up 11 home runs and 70 hits in 47.2 innings of work in 2016. Following a couple of demotions to the minors, Sevy pitched in 23.1 innings out of the bullpen and held opponents to a .105/.209/.158 slash line, while maintaining a 0.39 ERA and striking out 25.

Instead of shifting him into a bullpen role, however, the organization is rightfully being stubborn to make the kid a starter, as he has immense upside.

In spring training, Severino maintained a 3.95 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 13.2 innings of work with a much-improved changeup, but a little shakiness with fastball command.

As for the other competitors, it’s apparent that Bryan Mitchell will head to the bullpen while Jordan Montgomery heads to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after a legitimate run at the job. Chad Green will head to Double-A. Both Green and Montgomery will get starts on April 6 and 11 for their respective minor league clubs.

It’s possible that either Green or Montgomery will earn the fifth spot when manager Joe Girardi goes to a five-man rotation on April 16.
