New York Jets: Marshon Lattimore Could Be the Next Dee Milliner 1

After talking with a trusted scout, my perception of who the New York Jets should select in the upcoming NFL Draft has shifted considerably.

Despite the New York Jets adding a corner (finally) in free agency, the position remains an area of need. Every week on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, I speak with a scout to get his thoughts on the NFL Draft.

This week, we talked cornerbacks in the draft and the consensus No. 1 corner on the board in Marshon Lattimore — despite Connor Rogers from Bleacher Report telling us this shouldn’t be the narrative heading into the draft.

“I think he’ll be the first corner off the board, but I don’t think that’s the right choice. While he is an extremely talented player, you can’t take a corner in the top 10-15 picks with durability concerns. The last team to take a chance on a corner with injury issues was the Jets taking Dee Milliner. Obviously, that one didn’t pan out and it came back to bite them. Lattimore is probably a little bit more talented than Milliner, but the bottom line is it took him two years to get on the field at Ohio State. When he finally got on the field he was back off because he had to have surgery on those troublesome hamstrings.” – Via ESPNCNY.com from the audio vault

Harsh critiques, no doubt, for a player that has been a popular choice for the Jets in recent mock drafts. Including Todd McShay’s latest installment (Todd McShay’s 2017 NFL Mock Draft 3.0) in which he has the Jets passing on all the top quarterbacks and selecting Lattimore.

I don’t disagree with the positional need, but the Jets shouldn’t be drafting for need. They need to continue what they did last season by drafting the best player available, especially with the Jets set for a tank season in 2017. They need as much talent as possible, regardless of position.

It’s funny. Before I made a comparison from one former Ohio State product to another. I told the Jets to beware of drafting Darron Lee because he could be a combine warrior like a former Buckeye, Vernon Gholston.

Of course, I was met with some interesting backlash from not only the fan base but Darron Lee‘s mother on Twitter … true story. So when Connor said this on air, it was surprising that I hadn’t made the comparison myself.

So, with a large amount of trepidation, I again warn the fanbase and I guess Marshon Lattimore‘s mother as well: buyer beware. At least this time Connor can take the heat if Marshon ends up being a superstar.

People call me Boy Green for my unwavering dedication to all things New York Jets. I work at The Score 1260 in Syracuse and I'm extremely passionate about sports. I aspire to continue my rise through the business and hopefully I'll end up working for the New York Jets in some capacity.
