Elite Sports NY Into the Isles Podcast 4

After a franchise-record nine-game road trip and last night’s debacle, the New York Islanders have a ton of questions lingering in net. Who will start in Carolina Tuesday night? Is Thomas Greiss still capable of being a number one goalie? Will Jaroslav Halak ever get called up?

Nightmare in net

It’s been a long time since the New York Islanders allowed eight goals in a game and the last time it happened may very well have been this 9-0 loss to the Hurricanes in 2009.

JF Berube has had a nightmare of a season. After Jaroslav Halak was waived and Thomas Greiss became the undisputed starter, it was believed that Berube would see more ice time as a backup. That was not the case.

Berube has seen little start time since coming to the New York Islanders, and that falls on the management who decides which goaltender starts in net. This has affected Berube’s play and the confidence of the team playing in front of him.

With their first home game played in nearly three weeks away, the Islanders needed a statement win from their fluky backup netminder. Instead, the Islanders now have more questions than they’d like in goal once again.

With audible chants of “We Want Jaro!” reverberating in the Barclays Center, will Garth oblige? Will Berube find his game? Or will the backup goaltending do the Islanders in and put them out of the playoff hunt?

It’s the topic of conversation in this edition of Into the Isles.
