According to some pretty important people in NFL circles, the New York Giants are still “in” on free agent TE Martellus Bennett.

This one is intriguing, no doubt, but shouldn’t be touched by New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the G-Men are interested in the services of free-agent tight end Martellus Bennett.

Bennett, 29, is coming off one of the most impressive seasons of his career. He hauled in 55 catches for 701 yards and seven touchdowns in a year Tom Brady and the New England Patriots desperately needed a stud at the position once Rob Gronkowski suffered yet another injury.

Not only did he put up the numbers, but Bennett was a solid citizen while doing his job in the running game.

For those Giants fans who remember more than a year ago, Bennett played with Big Blue during the 2012 season, a year that saw him finish with 55 receptions, 656 yards and five scores.

As much as Eli Manning and company do need a vertical threat tight end, however, Bennett needs not be touched in this situation.

His talent his obvious. He’d instantly provide a middle threat with the dangerous trio of Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall and Sterling Shepard on the outside. Even still, he seems like a guy who’s only worth it in the most perfect situation.

Bennett’s been known as a headache to a couple teams over the course of his nine-year NFL career. He, along with his brother Michael Bennett, love extracurricular activities above and beyond football.

In New England, under the leadership of both Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, Bennett wouldn’t dare dream of acting out while on a contract year.

Could we expect the same in New York after he had just signed a multi-year contract and felt the oats of a Vince Lombardi Trophy?

Stay away Jerry Reese. Find that vertical threat elsewhere.
