New York’s very own Jason Marquis led Israel to a 2-1 win against South Korea in the World Baseball Classic on Monday.Marquis was the starter for Israel and pitched three scoreless innings. Scott Burcham hit a go-ahead single in the 10th-inning for Israel and reliever Josh Zeid stroke out four and allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings to give Israel the win. Marquis allowed two hits, walked one and struck out three in his three innings, according to Chris Han of MLB.com.
The pitcher from New York is currently a free agent but could be back in the majors if he continues to pitch well in the World Baseball Classic. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2015 with the Cincinnati Reds.
“I’ve trained this offseason like I’m going to pitch for seven months,” he said. “I want to be ready for the long haul — if it happens that way. My agents have sent out some feelers, but I didn’t throw for any teams this winter. The WBC is a good platform to show where I stand. Hopefully, everything goes well. You never know what can happen with teams, whether it’s injuries or younger pitchers not being as ready as they thought. Maybe I can snag a job.”
Marquis had been in the majors for 15 seasons. He has a 124-118 record with a 4.61 ERA and 1,174 strikeouts. He has appeared in seven playoff series, including the World Series in 2004 and was an All-Star in 2009.
Let’s hope that Marquis gets a job in the majors after the World Baseball Classic. He is a good pitcher and would be a good addition to any team that is looking to improve its pitching.
