The New York Yankees moved their spring record to 6-1 after surviving seven unanswered runs by the Atlanta Braves.

Despite committing three errors, the New York Yankees were able to escape Thursday night’s contest with a win over the Atlanta Braves by a score of 8-7.
Bryan Mitchell (2-0), one of the contestants for the final two spots in New York’s rotation, dazzled in his second start of the spring by holding the Braves hitless through three and striking out two.
The righty was relieved by Dellin Betances, who made his spring debut coming off an all-star campaign and an interesting first go-around in arbitration. He posted a hitless frame and walked one.
The Yankees actually scored eight unanswered runs to start the contest, but that would change when Jordan Montgomery surrendered three runs (two earned) on three hits. He was charged with two runs on the three-run home run by Johan Camargo in the seventh off J.P. Feyereisen.
Yankee pitchers combined for seven runs (six earned) and surrendered three home runs to Camargo, Micah Johnson and Adam Walker.
Offensively, Jacoby Ellsbury got the ball rolling for the bombers with a solo home run off Braves’ starter Jaime Garcia in the first. He finished his day 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a hit by pitch.
Starlin Castro also had himself a day by going 2-for-3 with a RBI single to kick off the bottom of the third. Castro, Matt Holliday and Chase Headley each registered a RBI in the frame to give the Yankees a 4-0 lead.
Three innings later, infielder Pete Kozma capped off a three-run fifth by doubling to center off Sean Newcomb to score Tyler Wade and extend the Yankees’ lead to eight. That would be enough, as seven unanswered runs over the final frames weren’t enough for the Braves to complete the comeback.

After going 2-0 with a 0.57 ERA and making a serious case for himself in Spring Training last year, Mitchell seems to have channeled the magic yet again.
In his first two starts in this year’s showcase, Mitchell has won both games and hasn’t allowed a single hit. To begin his 2017 season, he’s 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in five innings of work including three strikeouts.
After being sidelined with a broken toe right before opening day last season, the 25-year old made his regular-season debut on September 7 against the Toronto Blue Jays and finished with a 3.24 ERA over five starts. If he cracks the regular season with a spot in the starting five, he has shown he has the ability to get hitters out and win some ballgames.

What’s Next:
The Bombers will play host to the Baltimore Orioles at 6:35 Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Adam Warren will get his second start of the spring, coming off two shutout innings against the Phillies in a 6-5 loss at Spectrum Field on Saturday. While it appears his usefulness in the bullpen as a long reliever and spot starter hinders his chance to earn a rotation spot, he’s still getting a crack at it.
