The New York Yankees put their power bats into use on Thursday, dismantling the Baltimore Orioles behind three home runs.

  • Baltimore Orioles: 1 (3-4)
  • New York Yankees: 8 (7-1)
  • Spring Training, FINAL
  • George M. Steinbrenner Field, Tampa, FL

Adam Warren started for the New York Yankees, pitching well in three innings while surrendering only one run. The right-hander is currently vying for one of the final spots in the starting rotation.

However, the versatility of Warren will most likely leave him in the bullpen to begin the season, but could potentially find himself a starting role as the season goes on.

The 29-year old was relieved in the fourth by left-handed flamethrower Aroldis Chapman, who made his spring training debut.

The Cuban-born hurler made the Baltimore hitters look foolish at the plate, retiring all three batters that came up to face him.

The Yankees pitchers would be dominant for the majority of the evening. Tyler Clippard and Tommy Layne each pitched a scoreless inning each, while Dietrich Enns gave the club two scoreless frames.

Giovanny Gallegos would finish it off in the ninth and send the team home with their seventh win so far this spring.

Offensively, designated hitter Matt Holliday launched an opposite field solo home run in the second to give the Bombers an early lead. This was the veteran’s first home run of a very early spring.

A few innings later in the fourth, first baseman Greg Bird launched a two-run dinger out of the stadium to break the tie and give New York a two-run lead.

The next inning catcher Gary Sanchez decided he would give the club some insurance by driving in top prospect Gleyber Torres to put the Yankees up by three. However, the scoring would not stop there.

Outfield prospect Billy McKinney would come to the plate for his first at-bat in the seventh and club a two-run shot to right for his second home run of the spring.

McKinney certainly made his mark on the night, coming back up in the eigth and driving in another RBI with a double to right-center.

The scoring barrage would come to an end after the Bombers came up with eight runs on 14 hits in just dominating fashion agaisnt the Orioles.

Bird Is The Word:

The Yankees should be very optimistic so far with the performance first baseman Greg Bird has shown them in his return to the field after missing the entire 2016 season.

After going 1-for-3 on Thursday with yet another home run, Bird raised his spring average to a comfortable .417 with a stellar three home runs.

It was just a few days ago when the left-hander clubbed two homers against the rival Boston Red Sox and judging by tonight’s performance, he does not seem like he is slowing down anytime soon.

Hopefully for the Bronx Bombers, Bird can bring this power showcase back to Yankee Stadium and refresh some fans’ memories of his stellar debut in 2015.

Here Comes CC:

The second-longest current tenure Yankee CC Sabathia is set to make his spring training debut on Tuesday following a successful simulated outing on Thursday.

In 2016, the left-hander hurled his best season statistically since 2012. In 30 starts, Sabathia went 9-12 with a 3.91 ERA with 152 strikeouts and proved to be the second best pitcher in New York’s rotation.

The Yankees will be counting on CC to repeat this performance in 2017 and bring some consistency to what is currently a very questionable starting rotation.

What’s Next:

The pinstripers will head to Dunedin, Florida, to play the division rival Toronto Blue Jays at 1:07 PM ET at their spring training home of Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

Luis Severino will be making his second start of the spring, coming off two scoreless innings pitched on Sunday against the same Blue Jays.

Like many other hurlers in camp, the right-hander is looking to earn himself a spot in the starting rotation and hasn’t done anything to discredit his case thus far.

The game will be telecasted on the MLB Network. ESNY will also provide you with a full recap and analysis of the action as well.
