Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. thinks he has what it takes to defeat Gennady Golovkin. Did he mean in a boxing match?
Gennady Golovkin has stood across from 36 other fighters, and not one has come close to beating him. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. thinks he’d change that.“I don’t have a problem [fighting Golovkin],” Chavez said earlier this week during a stop on the press tour for the Canelo fight. “First I need to beat Canelo. And after I beat Canelo, and I’ve got my confidence again – I sparred with Golovkin four times and I felt his punches. He’s heavy-handed, but in his [last] fight, Kell Brook hurt him in England. I think I can beat him.”
Chavez (50-2-1, 32 KOs) has fought only six times in the past five years, losing twice. Nothing he’s done in any of those contests even remotely suggests he’d trouble GGG.
Golovkin has stopped 23 straight opponents. Chavez hasn’t stopped anyone since Andy Lee in 2012, and was stopped himself by Andrzej Fonfara in 2015.
