During a simulated New York Yankees first baseman Greg Bird absolutely crushed a pitch and sent it over the right-field wall.

Try and think of something better than the sound of a crushing home run on a warm and sunny day. You can’t? That’s what I thought.

New York Yankees‘ rising prospect Giovanny Gallegos threw a simulated game at 9 am on Monday at George M. Steinbrenner Field and fell victim to the power of Greg Bird.

Bird, on what appeared to be a fastball up by the belt, took Gallegos deep and out to right field for an absolute bomb. Right off the bat, you could tell the ball had no intentions of staying in the yard.

Although it’s just a simulated game, the 25-year old righty maintained a 1.27 ERA across 42 appearances between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season and struck out 106 batters in 78 innings of work.

It’s also good to see some pop in Greg Bird’s bat.

The lefty slashed .261/.343/.529 with 11 home runs in 46 games in 2015 — a total of 38 when proportioned to a full season — but missed the entire 2016 after operating on a torn right labrum.

Bird returned to action during the Arizona Fall League and while he showed rust (17 games, 1 HR, .215 BA), his on-base percentage (.346) and walks (12) convinced his organization that although his power and swing may be slacking due to the operation, the discipline did not disappear.

If the power in the video above is foretelling the future, the Yankees may be able to obtain something they didn’t have at all in 2016: steady and impactful production from the first base position.
