The New York Jets finally have their escape plan figured out and while it’s a public relations disaster, it will save them a few million dollars in the process.
Darrelle Revis has just provided the New York Jets with exactly what they were looking for: a one-way ticket off of Revis Island for good.This situation is equatable to that of a boyfriend waiting for the right moment to dump a girlfriend who’s overstayed her welcome. Even though the girlfriend may have a clean track record, all it takes is one slip up.
“A slip up” would be one way to describe what happened last weekend with one of the Jets greatest players in franchise history. My father always told me a lesson that I still hold onto to this day, “nothing good happens after 2 a.m.”
That was the case for Revis. While the details are still fuzzy and it’s a classic game of he said, she said. The gist of what happened is that Revis was out and about when some fans approached him and wanted to confirm his identity.
He said that he was, fans started videoing him and things escalated. But the point of this article isn’t to debate the facts.
There was already a better than 50 percent chance that Revis wasn’t returning to the Jets. With this latest transaction, it all but seals his fate with gang green and quite possibly his NFL career.
At one point the Jets were willing to eat the remaining $6 million in guarantees left on Revis’ deal, but now that is no longer necessary. According to Ed Werder of ESPN who appeared on Mike and Mike Friday morning, the Jets will be able to recoup that money if, in fact, they choose to release him.
According to MMQB.com and NJ.com, the contract states that the guarantee is voided if he’s fined or suspended for violating the NFL’s personal-conduct policy or “if the player engages in personal conduct reasonably judged by Club to adversely affect or reflect on Club.”
Regardless, it seems inevitable that the Revis era is over. With one of the top corners in NFL history on his way out, reportedly, the Jets hope to be bringing in the next GOAT at the position.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini has said, “they’re exploring the high-end market and could make a quick splash once free agency opens.” That should be good news for not only Jets fans, but for head coach Todd Bowles’ job security.
