The New York Giants re-sign defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo after his contract expires.

The New York Giants re-signed defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo on Wednesday.

After being with the Los Angeles Rams, the New Orleans Saints, and the Baltimore Ravens Spagnuolo returned to the Giants on a two-year deal in 2015. His contract expired after the Super Bowl but the Giants wanted him back.

“He’s a guy that didn’t panic when things were going wrong and was never overly excited when they were great,” defensive tackle Damon Harrison said. “He has this calm about him and assurance that everything would work out for the better defensively, and I think it rubbed off on everybody in our room. Great coach!”

Spagnuolo will be entering his seventh season as a defensive coordinator. However, this is his second stint with the Giants. The last time he was with the Giants they beat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

The defensive coordinator led the NFL’s 10th-ranked defense which allowed the second-fewest points in the league this past season, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN. Big Blue’s defense allowed 17.8 points a game, trailing only the Super Bowl champion Patriots who allowed 15.6 points per game.

Spagnuolo’s defensive assistants and all of the other coaches are expected to return. The Giants made the playoffs this past season but were eliminated by the Green Bay Packers. Now Spagnuolo will try to help lead the Giants to another Super Bowl title.
