The New York Yankees have announced the 23 players that will attend Spring Training as non-roster invites.
Just under two weeks away from the date in which pitchers and catchers report, the New York Yankees have announced the 23 non-roster Spring Training invites for 2017.
Gleyber Torres, Clint Frazier, James Kaprielian, Justus Sheffield, Chance Adams and Dustin Fowler are among the popular names given invitations while 11 players were signed to minor league contracts, as announced in a press release early Tuesday afternoon:
The New York Yankees today announced that they have signed 11 players to minor league contracts with an invitation to Major League Spring Training: C Wilkin Castillo, INF Ji-Man Choi, C Kellin Deglan, C Francisco Diaz, LHP Jason Gurka, INF Pete Kozma, LHP Joe Mantiply, RHP Nick Rumbelow, LHP Evan Rutckyj, INF Donovan Solano and INF Ruben Tejada.
Diaz, Kozma, Rumbelow, Rutckyj and Solano were among invites last spring and will return here in 2017 on new minor league contracts.
Rumbelow, 25, missed the entire 2016 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April and Solano, 29, played in nine games for the Yankees a year ago (.227/.261/.455).
Former Met, Ruben Tejada is also a notable invite as he packs a decent amount of experience and success.
In the majors, Tejada’s best year was in 2012, when he maintained a .333 on-base percentage in 114 games for the Mets and even finished with the second-highest batting average (.289) among National League shortstops with at least 500 plate appearances.
Catcher Jorge Saez, who was selected by the Yankees from the Toronto Blue Jays in the first round of the Triple-A phase of the 2016 Rule-5 draft, is also among the non-roster invites.
Of the Yankees’ 23 non-roster invitees, six have been named among the organization’s Top 10 prospects by Baseball America, only nine were originally drafted by the club and it will carry a total of 63 players in camp this spring.
