The New York Jets decided to stick with their current regime for next season. Will the third time be the charm in 2017?

In the midst of a 4-11 season and a tumultuous 2016 campaign, the future was uncertain in Gotham. One 30-10 Week 17 victory against the Buffalo Bills later, head coach Todd Bowles wasn’t surprised by the news that he would return along with general manager Mike Maccagnan next season.

On how he feels about the team confirming he will coach next season:

“I just coach football. I understand the (requirements) of the job. I’m not going to take away from the team win today. I knew I would be here, so it really wasn’t a big deal,” Via the New York Jets Media Relations Department.

Coach Bowles apparently knew he would be the lead man in 2017, but his team didn’t play like it. There was passion, good defense, and an inspired effort all around from the team.

This team looked like it was playing for their coach and it showed in what some would call a meaningless game. Continuity is the key to long-term success.

While that is the case, some continuity will die this offseason in the form of dead-weight. Several cap casualties are inevitable and not just on the roster, but the coaching staff.

The Jets still are expected to make some changes to their coaching staff, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The leading candidate to get the ax is, surely, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

Last season, the Jets offense shattered long-standing franchise records. This season, it has been a total disaster from injuries to turnovers. Long story short, the Jets are glad that the clock has struck midnight on the 2016 season.

Jets owner Woody Johnson made the correct decision in bringing back Bowles and Maccagnan. So often, teams and fans want immediate results and if they don’t get them they get trigger happy.

While the 5-11 mark wasn’t what Jets fans were hoping for this season, there should be reason for optimism. The Jets have a young core of talent. This collection just underperformed all season long.

With some future cap space that’ll be created by some releases, the sixth overall draft choice, and free agency, this team has a chance to get right back into the thick of things in 2017.
