New York Islanders: Jiggs McDonald planning to retire in February

Broadcasting legend, as well as Hockey Hall of Famer Jiggs McDonald, is planning on retiring from the broadcasting booth come February.

Longtime sports broadcaster who spent time broadcasting the New York Islanders, Jiggs McDonald, has decided to hang up the microphone after the Kings game on February 9.

This year will make it 50 consecutive years in which McDonald has been in the broadcasting booth for at least one event.

“In all likelihood that will be the finale, Eric,” McDonald told Eric Bordin of The Sports Daily. “Just works out that the Kings game I was asked to do is a month after the MSG/Islanders game Vs FL. That lets me say I did at least a game in each of 50 NHL seasons.”

John Kenneth “Jiggs” McDonald began his broadcasting career in 1967 when he became the voice of the Los Angeles Kings.

He began his Islanders career in 1980 and has also called play-by-play for the New York Mets in 1982 and in 1992, he did play-by-play on CTV for Olympic basketball games.

Islanders fans will surely remember the commentary of the broadcasting legend who’s presence will assuredly be missed in the broadcast both on a game-by-game basis.
