The New York Jets got embarrassed in prime-time on Monday Night Football. But perhaps Todd Bowles was even more embarrassing in the post game.
The New York Jets are having an abysmal season. This isn’t anything new. But their head coach is making it a lot more difficult of a season to swallow.What changed from last week to this week? Well, last night in the 41-10 blowout loss, I guess it did become official that the Jets were eliminated from postseason contention. Even though we didn’t need a rocket scientist to tell us the Jets would be missing the playoffs for the sixth straight season.
The proof was in the pudding. The Jets have been playing awful and while Ryan Fitzpatrick isn’t solely responsible, he certainly hasn’t been helping the cause. So this is where Jets fans, like myself, start to get pissed off. Last week head coach Todd Bowles made these comments in regards to the quarterback position, thanks to the New York Jets Media Relations Department:
“As a coach, you weigh trying to win ball games first and there’s a time and place that those guys will get a chance to play.”
On if he is factoring next year into his coaching decisions …
“Not at this point, no. We’re just trying to win ball games and get everybody better.”
AR 3-8 this coach said he was still all about winning games and that there’d be a time and place for younger guys to see work. Fast forward a week and another loss and suddenly the Jets are ready to look at the future?
A premeditated decision that in fact was going to happen regardless of what happened last night.
“We could have won 45-0 and he was going to start the last four games.”
That makes no sense.
The Jets were 3-8 and they were solely playing for pride, nothing else. This decision came a few weeks too late. Regardless of the ineptitude in making this decision, finally, Bryce Petty will have a four-game audition of sorts. Petty has the opportunity to prove that he should be the Jets starter in 2017. Or, perhaps, that his ceiling is a career backup.
Many pundits believed that Bowles was safe regardless of what happened to finish the season. But the questionable affiliation and stubbornness with Fitzpatrick have raised eyebrows. These boneheaded decisions could be the final straw for Bowles in Gotham.
