The New York Yankees have announced that LHP Jacob Lindgren has been non-tendered, leaving an open spot on the roster.
Friday night, the New York Yankees non-tendered 23-year old left-handed pitcher Jacob Lindgren, New York’s second-round pick of the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft from Mississippi State University.
He was the top draft pick out of that draft and even made his major league debut just one year later but pitched in a mere seven games while struggling with injuries.
In 2016, Lindgren went down with an elbow ligament tear that needed Tommy John surgery. His recovery time will more than likely keep him out of action until 2018.
Don’t think he’s gone for good, however.
With this move, the Yankees will likely re-sign him to a minor league deal which enables them to keep him in the organization while vacating a spot on the 40-man roster as he recovers.
After picking him in the second round, one would expect New York would think highly enough of Lindgren to try to avoid losing him on a waiver deal.
That’s exactly what happened, while also opening a roster spot for either a free agent signing or a selection in the Rule 5 Draft next Thursday.
