It doesn’t matter that Kristaps Porzingis is already in his second year. The New York Knick captain, Carmelo Anthony, is still floored by his skills, via Ian Begley of ESPN New York.
“I’m still in awe of kind of some of the things he does on the court. Like yesterday, he made a move and I’m like, ‘Damn.’ You know what I mean? I’m still like a fan of kind of his talent and his skill level,” Anthony said after Monday’s practice. “I always thought it would kind of take longer to get acclimated. He’s doing a great job with just kind of taking it day by day, still getting a feel for the game and figuring it out on the fly.”
Porzingis’ early-season offensive numbers have been impressive. He’s shooting 49.5 percent overall and 39 percent from beyond the arc, up from 42 and 33, respectively, last season. He’s also scoring 20.2 points per game, six more than last season.
“I don’t want to say it’s anything different than I’m doing other than kind of playing off of guys now. I don’t have to do so much with the ball in my hands the majority of the time,” he said. “A lot of the time the ball is finding me with Derrick and Brandon. With KP playing well right now sometimes it’s opening things up for myself.”
Melo, KP, and the Knicks are slated to tip-off against the Portland Trail Blazers at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.
