Despite a hot start, Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks were defeated by the Utah Jazz Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden.

The New York Knickerbockers were impressive to begin this Sunday afternoon matinee at Madison Square Garden. Taking on the formidable Utah Jazz, the offense was clicking early on. Both Kristaps Porzingis and Carmelo Anthony started extremely hot, each scoring double-figures in the 1st-quarter.

Unfortunately, the hot start (a 30-20 advantage after the first frame) couldn’t carry them through as the Jazz played a much more consistent second half and maintained a comfortable lead throughout the fourth. It was the 35 free throws for the Jazz that kept them alive early on. They hit on 30.

Playing in his first game of the season, Gordon Hayward was splendid in scoring 28 points while chipping in with five rebounds. Point guard George Hill added 23 points to go along with nine dimes.

Rudy Gobert put an exclamation point on the contest late in the game:

Early in the game, the Madison Square Garden crowd reminded the world why New York City still boasts the top hoops fans in the world. They made sure to get all over Melo when they felt he dribbled the ball too much in a non-Iso situation:

Melo, though, shut ’em up with the long two. Anthony finished with 28 on a nice shooting day (12-20). KP was right there, as well, with 28 on 10-of-18 from the floor.

The disappointing loss moves the Knickerbockers to 2-4 on the season. They’ll next host the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night.
