Despite a horrid beginning to the contest, Eli Manning, Odell Beckham Jr., and the rest of the New York Giants defeat the Baltimore Ravens.

From a New York Football Giants perspective, this Sunday afternoon affair against the Baltimore Ravens couldn’t have started off more disastrously. Eli Manning and the offense were completely out of sync while putting its defense in terrible spots.

But then, Odell Beckham Jr. happened not once, but twice. His last effort came on a 4th-and-short slant that led to MetLife Stadium erupting:

It was also OBJ who gave the Giants their first lead of the game in the third quarter, his first TD of the season:

All told, Beckham Jr. finished the game with 222 yards and those two touchdowns on eight grabs. It was the second most prolific receiving day in New York’s history.

Make no mistake about it, though. This game was a struggle for the Giants. The defense performed admirably despite the fact they were put in unenviable positions all first-half long. John Harbaugh’s decision to go for it on 4th-down in the 3rd-quarter down four points — instead of making it a one-point game with the chip shot field goal — was also a nice break.

For the most part, the day belonged to Eli Manning and the explosive plays. Eli threw his 300th career TD as he hit Roger Lewis Jr. on the corner route to get the G-Men on the scoreboard:

Manning finished with an incredible 403 yards and three touchdowns on 32-of46 passing. The big play was the Raven’s kryptonite all game long.

The rushing game couldn’t get going all afternoon. Rashad Jennings carried the ball just nine times for 15 yards, Bobby Rainey six for 13, and Paul Perkins twice for 10 yards. 

Aside from Beckham’s breakout day, no other Giants weapon finished with more than 34 yards through the air (Larry Donnell, 34 yards).

Game Notes:

In the 2nd-quarter, OBJ left the game with what looked like a hip pointer after crashing hard to the turf on a nicely defended deep ball. He left the game and went into the locker room. He came back for the last possession with just two minutes to go in the first half.

Everything wasn’t roses for Beckham. On the Giants first possession, he fumbled. He also picked up a nonsensical unsportsmanlike conduct penalty thanks to taking his helmet off in celebration on the game-winning TD. The penalty allowed Baltimore to start the final drive beyond the 30-yard line.

Joe Flacco finished with 307 yards on 26-of-48 passing while Terrance West rushed for 87 yards on 23 carries.

The win now moves New York to 3-3 while the loss places Baltimore at 3-3 as well. Next up for the Giants will be the St. Louis Rams in London next Sunday.
