Stake Your Claim: Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Week 4
Brad Penner, USATSI

After a backwards weekend in the NFL full of upsets and blowouts, one thing remains constant – fantasy football is just as unpredictable.

There weren’t as many injuries this week, but enough to impact fantasy football rosters across the nation. The waiver wire is a little thinner this week, so you may want to hold on to what you have on your roster. That is of course unless you’re a Jeremy Langford or Shane Vereen owner. As always, below is the list of players and what priority you should assign to them, depending on who you may have or what your needs may be for this upcoming week.

Worthy Of Your First Waiver Claim:

Jordan Howard

The aforementioned Jeremy Langford is out for 4-6 weeks with an ankle injury and Ka’Deem Carey is struggling to return to the field with a hamstring injury. Therefore, Howard should be your number one add if you’re in need of a running back. Up to this point, Howard has looked average in limited action, but he is now the clear-cut number one running back in Chicago. So far this season, Howard has logged 12 carries for 67 yards and hauled in 6 receptions for 56 yards with 0 touchdowns. While not spectacular, fantasy football is mostly about usage and opportunity, which Howard will have plenty of as a three-down back in the coming weeks.

Cole Beasley

If you need a wide receiver, and you play in a PPR format, highly consider adding Cole Beasley. The Cowboys slot receiver has double digit fantasy points in PPR formats in each of the first three weeks. Now that’s the type of consistency you need in fantasy football. Rookie signal callers tend to latch on to targets they can trust early on in their careers to ensure they get into a rhythm. It seems that Dak Prescott has found that in Beasley.

Worthy Of Your Second Waiver Claim

Orleans Darkwa & Paul Perkins

The injury to Shane Vereen and the uncertainty behind Rashad Jennings‘ thumb injury, means the New York Giants will need to turn to one of these two to carry the load. Darkwa looked great on Sunday, recording 62 yards and a touchdown on 11 total touches. Perkins has yet to record any stats in the regular season, but the Giants took him with the 149th overall pick for a reason. That reason was to eventually become a key part of their offense, although they were just hoping it wouldn’t be this soon. Definitely pick up Darkwa if you’re need of an RB/Flex, pick up Perkins if you have the roster space in a deeper league as a handcuff to a handcuff.

Zach Miller

Miller looked great on Sunday night, totaling eight catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Brian Hoyer seems to look the tight end’s way in key situations as one of his touchdown receptions came on a 4th and goal. Miller is a high end TE2 going forward with TE1 upside against weaker match-ups. Luckily for him, next week he faces the Detroit Lions defense who have allowed the most fantasy points to tight ends so far this season.

Future Add Of The Week:

Trevor Siemian put up 4 TDs against the normally tough Bengals defense on the road in Week 3. This rookie seems to be trending up at the perfect time too, especially if your starting QB has a bye in one of the next three weeks. The Broncos will go up against the Buccaneers, Falcons, and Chargers – all of which rank in the bottom five in surrendering fantasy points to quarterbacks this season.

Getting Defensive:

If you’re desperate for a defensive unit for Week 4, consider the Washington Redskins. They will be at home against a Cleveland Browns offense that has given up double digit points to defenses two out of the first three weeks, including 10 sacks and four turnovers. You may recall that the Redskins forced three turnovers on Sunday against the Giants while adding two sacks. The Cleveland Browns offense is nowhere near the caliber of the New York Giants offense, too.
