New York Yankees Respond To The Passing Of Jose Fernandez
Steve Mitchell, USATSI

On Sunday morning, the New York Yankees and the baseball world woke up to the tragic news that all-star pitcher Jose Fernandez has passed away.

The baseball world is in shock on this Sunday in late September. One of the top pitchers in all of baseball, Jose Fernandez has passed away leaving everyone throughout the nation speechless.

Prior to Sunday Afternoon’s game, the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays joined the rest of major league baseball and gave a moment of silence for the late pitcher.

When Yankees manager Joe Girardi was asked by the media in Toronto regarding Fernandez’s passing he had this to say:

“I think we’re all shocked…sad, very sad day. You think of all the people’s lives that this affects and how difficult it must be down there (Miami) right now. I don’t know how you ever get over it.”

On behalf of Hal Steinbrenner and the rest of the Yankees organization, the Yankees posted this statement on their twitter account:

Fernandez was only 24 years old. He was a generational talent that will be impossible to forget. He had a smile and a personality that could light up any room and, by all accounts, was a great person on and off the field. In his four short MLB seasons, Fernandez won the rookie of the year award as well receiving two all-star selections.

As we grieve the passing of Fernandez, it is important to send thoughts and prayers towards the family that was left behind.

Rest in peace, Jose Fernandez.
