Right after signing another brand new deal, New York Islanders pesky forward Stephen Gionta drops by Schwartz on Sports.
One thing is for certain at any level of sports: you can never have enough depth. And while New York Islanders Country continues to wait patiently for John Tavares to put pen to paper on an extension, the Isles made what might appear to be a small move on Tuesday when they signed forward Stephen Gionta to a one year, two-way contract.
On Wednesday, I spoke with Gionta over the phone and the former Devil is happy to be back on the Isle … and Brooklyn!
“Last year, I gotta say was probably some of the most fun I’ve had had playing hockey in a long time,” Gionta told me on the podcast. “It was a great group of guys. We’re on the rise and I think we can do a lot of damage.”
The Islanders finished one point out of the playoffs last season as the 33-year-old Gionta split time between the big club and the Isles’ AHL team in Bridgeport. With the Isles, Gionta had one goal and five assists in 26 games while also appearing in 7 games for the Sound Tigers. This year, he’ll add some valuable roster depth as the Islanders look to return to the playoffs.
