The New York Mets have activated the former Gold Glove award winner Juan Lagares from the disabled list, who is expected to start Friday.

Following missing the beginning of the season due to a strained left oblique, New York Mets outfielder Juan Lagares has been activated from the disabled list and is ready to get back on the field.

In order to make room for Lagares on the big league roster, the Mets decided to option relief pitcher Paul Sewald to the team’s Triple-A affiliate Las Vegas 51s.

Lagares will be available off the bench on Thursday night despite not being the starting lineup. However, he is expected to start Friday’s game against Adam Conley and the Miami Marlins.

There was talk of the Mets demoting outfielder Michael Conforto to prevent an outfield logjam, but they decided to keep him on board as an extra outfielder due to his great performance on the field as of late.

In 2016, Lagares slashed .239/.301/.380 with just three home runs. These are numbers Lagares will have to improve on in 2017 if he wants to secure himself a spot in the team’s starting lineup.

It will interesting to see how Lagares being activated from the disabled list affects the Mets’ very crowded outfield situation.
