The Buffalo Bills are looking for a new coach after firing Rex Ryan and former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin would be a good choice.

The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Rex Ryan on Tuesday.

The firing comes after the Bills lost to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, which eliminated Buffalo from playoff contention for the 17th straight year. Bills defensive coordinator, Rex’s brother, Rob Ryan, was also relieved of his duties. Offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn will be the interim head coach for the Bills season finale against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Ryan didn’t have full support from his team, especially from the defense players, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN. Bills defensive end Leger Douzable, who also played for Ryan with the Jets, objected to the firing on Twitter:

“I spoke with Rex earlier today and we mutually agreed that the time to part ways is now,” Bills owner Terry Pegula said in a statement. “These decisions are never easy. I want to take this opportunity to thank Rex for all his efforts and wish him all the best moving forward. Kim and I and our entire Bills organization share in the same disappointment and frustration as our fans, but we remain committed to our goal of bringing a championship to Western New York.”

The Bills hired Ryan in January 2015 after Doug Marrone opted out of his contract. In 31 games with the Bills, he had a 15-16 record. He has a 61-66 overall record as a coach and had four consecutive non-winning seasons before the Jets fired him after the 2014 season.

So the question now becomes, “Who will be the Bills head coach?” Former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin is one possibility.

Coughlin would be a good choice to be the Bills new coach. He has said that he’s interested in coaching again after taking this year off. He could help the Bills become cohesive and build team chemistry, which they have lacked, especially on defense.

Earlier this year, Coughlin met with the Bills about a consulting role with the team. However, the pairing wasn’t a good fit sources told ESPN NFL Insider Chris Mortensen. Based upon the meeting earlier this year, the Bills might not have much interest in Coughlin, which would be a shame since he would be good for them.

Coughlin, who won two Super Bowls with the Giants, could turn things around in Buffalo and lead the Bills to the playoffs and maybe the Super Bowl. If the Bills don’t have Coughlin as their next coach they better have someone who is as good as Coughlin or they will keep missing the playoffs.
