Former Blueshirt Ryan Callahan gets all over New York Rangers center Derek Stepan after Auston Matthews scores four goals in debut.

Toronto Maple Leafs stud Auston Matthews, as you’re already aware, tallied four goals in his NHL debut. A feat that impressive hasn’t been accomplished in quite some time.

A while ago, there was a New York Rangers youngster who impressed in his very first NHL game as well. His name is Derek Stepan, who scored three goals against the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 9, 2010.

Former Blueshirt and current Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Callahan recently reminded Stepan that his feat doesn’t look so impressive anymore:

Stepan also spoke about that magical opening NHL night, via Alex Prewitt of SI.com:

“Feels like a long time ago,” forward Derek Stepan says. “When you’re in the moment, you don’t really know what’s going on. The puck just seems to find you.”

After an impressive opening night win against the Islanders at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers are now in St. Louis to take on the Blues on Saturday night.
