Two power play goals were all the New York Islanders needed in defeating Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 on Tuesday night.

If there was ever an opponent to knock off after their rousing victory at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins were just that opponent.

Trailing the New York Islanders by only three points in the Metropolitan Division for the No. 3 seed, the Pens were defeated by captain John Tavares and the Isles at the Barclays Center on Tuesday night by the final count of 2-1.

It was a defensive battle all the way into leading Jaroslav Halak in stopping 31 shots and collecting his 200th career victory. Thomas Greiss had to replace Halak late in the third as he suffered what seemed to be a minor injury.

Tavares and Anders Lee both scored power-play goals, with Lee’s game-winner coming 8:55 into the final frame. Kris Letang scored the only Pittsburgh goal.

Next up for the Isles will be the Toronto Maple Leafs north of the border on Wednesday night.
