The controversial one, Alex Rodriguez, decides to homer in his first crack at hit No. 3,000 tonight against Justin Verlander at The Stadium.

And so it is done.

The much maligned Alex Rodriguez homers in his very first at-bat tonight at Yankee Stadium to collect his 3,000th hit. It was a night game for his New York Yankees who welcomed in the Detroit Tigers. The pitcher was Justin Verlander.

The pitch was a two-seem fastball that Verlander tried to come backdoor on. A-Rod calmly hit it the other way into the short right-field porch of The Stadium.

Of course this moment wasn’t anything in comparison to the great Derek Jeter farewell tour a season ago. Nor was it even close to Jeter’s 3,000th hit coming on a home run at Yankee Stadium.

For Alex and the overall situation though, it was warmly received.

The fans responded, as did his teammates.

The Yankees lead the Tigers, 1-0, as the teams play on in the second-inning.
